This is an original Greaves and Thomas swivel egg chair, a design classic. Not only does it make an amazing statement piece in any room, it’s also the perfect chair to curl up with a book in.

A London based company with a history dating back to the early 1900’s. In the early years the Greaves & Thomas company specialised in lounge furniture and upholstery. But the mid 20th century the company was producing a range of high-end contemporary furniture, influenced by the Danish style trend of clean, simple lines and curves.
Original Condition
These pieces were ahead of their time. The shell was moulded from fibreglass and then covered in foam, which gives them a “Space Age” vibe. They’re fun, stylish and very comfortable. The original top fabrics were often stretchy synthetics in bold florals. This one was in such a sorry state, there was no trace of the top cover.
It was completely rebuilt, replacing all the nasty old 60’s foam and fillings, so it now meets current Fire Safety Regulations. This was quite a job because the foam was still firmly stuck to the fibreglass mould, although it had been damaged and missing in several places.
The swivel mechanism was a bit crunchy and stiff. It’s now smooth and quiet again.
Top Fabric
As this chair was one of my finds and not a commissioned work, I got to choose the top fabric. It’s a top quality 100% wool boucle fabric in a stunning red/tangerine colourway- warm and inviting. Wool is a great choice for top fabric. Because it has some “give” wool can be encouraged to fit around the beautiful curves of these chairs. They cry out for bold statement colours to show off their fluid lines.
